Mysore is one of the important south Indian cities for tourists attracting both the local people and foreigners alike. Mysore is well connected by major cities both by train and bus. Once you are in mysore, you find all types of hotel starting from budget to luxury. It has a very good weather little hotter than its nearest city Bangalore.
In earlier centuries, Mysore was the capital city of many rulers thus you may witness many historical places in and around the city. Mysore is also called as cultural capital of Karnataka because of its famous Dasara procession. Dasara in Mysore is so famous that as soon as one says Dasara, it is no surprise that one adds Mysore to the word making it - Mysore Dasara.
For tourists, the first attraction in Mysore would be the Mysore Palace. Mysore palace was earlier the home of Maharajas who used to live there. Now, it is owned by the government and no one lives there. Every Sunday and on all national holidays between 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm the palace will be lighted. The palace once lighted looks magnificient !!
The below pictures would show you how it looks when it is lighted.
The next place to visit in Mysore would be the mysore zoo. You may find many different varieties of animals and birds. Though I like to see animals in their natural habitat ie. in jungles, for many it is still an attraction. It may be a place to visit if you are one among those who have never seen animals in your life time. All animals love their freedom like any other human being.
As soon as you enter the Mysore city, you may see a big hill. This hill is called as Chamundi hill - abode of mother Chamundi. There are many city buses which takes you to this hill in less than an hour. On the top of the hill, you may enjoy the beauty of this city. If you ever want to stay on top of the hill, there are many guest houses available - but I'm not sure of the quality of the service and cleaniness. Please enquire and then take one if you love to spend an evening on the hill enjoying the cool breeze. If you are a nature lover, you may try a near by place called Gopalaswamy betta which is 1 hour 30 minutes drive.
Mysore, apart from being famous for palaces and hills, it is also known for betel leaves called as Mysore betel. This is a special variety of of betel leave which tastes good and soft when consumed with arecanut . There is also a sweet by name Mysore paak which a special type of sweet made out of gram flour and sugar. I like Mysore paak !!
