Himavad Gopalaswamy betta (betta means hill in native language Kannada) is a 90 minute drive either by car or by a bus to the top of the mountain from Mysore city. Please see the location map to reach the place.
This hill is 1454 m above the sea level and densely wooded. Gopalaswamy betta is located in the chamarajanagar district of the karnataka state and is one of the highest peaks in the Bandipur wildlife sanctuary. You can reach the top of mountain by a vehicle. Before you start climbing via road, there is a forest department's entry point where you need to pay the entry fee as well.
You may wish to reach the bottom of the hill and plan for a trekking to the top of the mountain. If you reach the foothill around early morning then you will be lucky to see morning mist covering all the mountains. All along the way, you'll experience wonderful green nature spotted with moving mists.
Every moment will be a wonder and a miracle - like another natural wonder Jog falls !! The pictures taken on the way up to the hill...
Once you reach the mountain, it'll still be misty and moving clouds would welcome you. There is an ample parking place at the entrance of the temple. Here is the temple entrance.
To witness the incredible natural beauty, you need to walk and take the route behind the temple. There is basically no official route, but you'll see some foot marks leading you to the several mountains behind the temple. We walked down and could spot the places where there were many signs of wild elephants walking the same place last night.
In fact during the day, we could see bison and elephants grazing the field. This place is in meeting point of karanata, tamilnadu and kerala borders so if you go down the hill you will witness tropical forests of these states. I feel this is one of the best trekking holiday places in India and a nice family vacation spot where one can plan for a day's picnic if you are near to Mysore.
One last word: I love nature and I'm sure all humans do love nature as well - One day I do wish to live in a very natural environment completely integrating my life to nature. Before we visit such places, please let us understand our responsibility towards nature. Mankind would die within seconds if the nature is destroyed..- Let's preserve nature and nourish it and live in harmony with nature !
